This is more emphasized when it comes to apartments rather than houses. How long you need to walk to reach your closest subway station or a bus stop can be crucial, especially if you live in cities hit by unpleasant weather with a lot of rainy or snowy days.
According to the people who draw up maps of our cities, our urban planners, the conventional distance from your address to your train or bus should be around half a mile. A little less for buses and a little more for subways or trains. This can also be very important for commercial areas, too, because many offices which are positioned far away from subway station can be considered „B“ class. This can influence a much lower rent. Some researchers show that the rent can fall as much as 75% if the real estate offered for rent is more than a mile away from public transit. Urban planners, hence, need to work hard and think of new ways to bring people closer to transit hubs, making our lives easier and making the system work more efficiently.
Closer is better

People show better work results at their work and also feel better about the quality of their lives. The higher levels of mobility and access to different areas of the city also act as critical factors.
The negative effects
On the other hand, studies have shown that, on a larger scale, living close to work or near public transit can have a significant negative health effects. For example, a choice to live near a factory, a major pollutant of the whole area, can increase risks of exposure to carcinogenic fumes. This is particularly visible with lower classes, where the importance of living closer to your workplace (to save money and time) is more important than health concerns. Also, rents tend to be much lower in areas affected by environmental problems.
